Mentoring is a process in which an experienced individual helps another person develop his or her goals and skills through a series of time-limited, confidential, one-on-one conversations and other learning activities.
Mentors will have the opportunity to share their wisdom and experiences, evolve their own thinking, develop a new relationship, and strengthen skills as a mentor.
Mentees will receive will receive support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and a constructive example and role model.
Q2 Youth Empowerment
- Empowering youth: imparting social, mental wellness, academic, and career skills through activities
- Increasing youth community engagement: volunteering, activities, community events, etc.
- Developing long-lasting cross-cultural friendships amongst youth and bringing them together
- Promoting positive change in mentees’ lives and motivating them to fulfill their potentials
Individual sessions between a mentor and mentee will take place on a weekly basis. This will allow for opportunities for strengthening the relationship between the mentor and mentee, build trust and allow for continuous support and follow-up.
The Peer-to-Peer sessions will focus on creating a safe space for mentees to engage in dialogue and conversation about topics that they need support, guidance or are simply interested in. Mentors are encouraged to be a friend and supporting figure, as well as someone that the mentees can rely on and receive encouragement from. More specific topics that will be discussed during the peer-to-peer sessions include post-secondary guidance. Youth in our communities that are systematically told that post-secondary education is not an option for them.
Through this mentorship, mentees will be able to ask questions and will be provided resources on specific programs they are interested in, how to apply and receive support on the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) and Ontario College Application Service (OCAS) platforms, how to apply to scholarships and government grants, bursaries and loans, such as OSAP. Ideally, mentees will be partnered up with a mentor that is currently studying or working in the field of study that the mentee is interested in. This can further lead to informal career advice and support.
Group sessions will be run by QED on a monthly basis and mentees, along with their mentors, are highly encouraged to attend. The main focus of the monthly events will revolve around developing social skills and soft & hard skills through a series of recreational and social activities and group discussions, fostering cross-cultural friendships, and promoting community engagement. Building upon Canadian values, Q2 aims at furthering the belief that diversity is our strength by facilitating events that promote teamwork and cooperation.
We want participants to learn from each other’s’ differences, broaden their minds, and be exposed to the cultures of others in positive and fun ways. Beyond creating a Q2 community, the program promotes community engagement by developing a desire to volunteer and contribute to the community through the program’s own volunteer excursions and encouraging participants to take on leadership positions within the community. The monthly sessions aim at encouraging cooperation between mentees and their mentors, the program participants and the GTA as a whole.
So You Want to Be A Mentor
When you choose to be a mentor, you choose to take an active role in helping positively shape your mentee’s life. It’s a big responsibility, but also a lot of fun. Through Q2’s peer-to-peer mentorship, you will make a new a friend in your mentee and with them, explore the city, have great discussions, and meet once a week. Once a month, all the mentors and mentees will get together to learn new skills, make friends, and give back to the community.

We are looking for compassionate and encouraging individuals who are involved in their local communities.
Mentors must be
- above 19 years old
- enrolled/have completed post secondary education
- willing to commit 2 hrs / week & attend a monthly event for the duration of one year.

All mentors will go through a training program, and will have the opportunity to grow, develop leadership skills and earn volunteer credit for giving back to the community.
This program is designed for youth between the ages of 14-21. Mentees are expected to engage in respectful, positive and mature discussions with their mentors and fellow mentees during Peer-to-Peer events and Monthly events.
Mentees for this program should:
- Be willing to commit 2 hrs / week & attend a monthly event for a duration of six month
- Maintain regular contact with mentor
- Fill out an application in order to have the mentee’s needs assessed and matched with a suitable mentor
- Be honest and transparent with their feedback on their mentor and the program
